Blast from the past #4

In the Blast from the past post I’m going to recommend, review books, series that:

  1. I absolutely loved but I think never got the hype they deserved, nowadays you can’t even hear about them and/or just simply really underrated by my opinion.
  2. They are not recent releases, came out more than 3 years ago.

I’m going to try and do one every 2 weeks to one per month depends on my time. Not more frequently because my old review stash is depleting and not endless. I hope you are going to enjoy it. Also I’m going to try and write them as spoiler free as possible but some minor ones are unavoidable.

I was born to slay Crossworld demons.

Big black flappy ones, little green squirmy ones. Unfortunately, the only thing getting slain these days is my social life. With my high school under attack, combat classes intensifying, and Academy instructors dropping right and left, I can barely get my homework done, let alone score a bondmate before prom.

Then he shows up.

Jackson Smith-Hailey. Unspeakably hot, hopelessly unattainable, and dangerous in all the right ways. Sure, he’s my trainer. And okay, maybe he hates me. Doesn’t mean I’ll ignore the wicked Guardian chemistry between us. It’s crazy! Every time I’m with him, my powers explode. Awesome, right?

Wrong.

Now my teachers think I’m the murderous Graymason destined to bring down our whole race of angelbloods. Everyone in New Orleans is hunting me. The people I trusted want me dead. Jack and I have five days to solve the murders, prevent a vampire uprising, and thwart the pesky prophecy foretelling his death by my hand. Shouldn’t be too difficult.

Getting it done without falling in love? That might take a miracle

This one is a little bit of a cheat becaus the second book is only recently released but this one came out in 2013.

The teenage descendants of the angels keep the peace and order in the world, fight for the good and try to finish school with the best grades possible. This was the first impression I got after reading a couple of chapters. Despite my aversion of stories about angels I liked this one quite a bit. It surprised me and fans of Vampire academy definitely going to like it.

First it looks like you are going to get a clean, a bit predictable and straightforward plot but at a certain point events speed up and everything suddenly gets more complicated and complex. Whenever I thought I got it something changes direction and things get shaken up. I kinda got whiplash but it caused me a really positive surprise. It’s something incredible, the structure of the book.

Amelie, the lead, falls into the category I love. She is fierce, sharp tongued, doesn’t care about rules and really sarcastic. But still acts according to her age a lot too. These two sides of her mixes well together and creates a well working combination. She provide the most entertainment in the story, her actions made me laugh a lot and couldn’t wait for her next misstep or awkward moment. She developed a lot during the book in the maturity department. She is stronger, smarter and has a harder edge than you would think at first glance.

Jackson is an interesting character. He doesn’t fall into the usual little boxes, he is not the irresistible bad boy or the too good to be true, charming good guy either. He is kind of average, there is nothing extraordinary in him but you still can not like him. His personality is constantly changes; in every situation it’s different. He is like a chameleon. Discovering his true is an adventure in itself.

The romance bothered me a bit. The strong bond forming between them is hint a little bit of a love at first sight but fortunately they avoid it at the end. Yes there is a connection there but is much more complex than you would think.

What I really didn’t like about this book is the ending. I’m not really okay with the fate of Amelie. The way things ended makes a lot of my hopes for the next book impossible. Aside from this, Prophecy girl is a phenomenal read.

  1. Hi guys – love the blog 🙂

My name is Shaun and I’m an author, just wondering if you consider reviewing books, in exchange for a free ebook copy?

Here is a link to my YA fantasy novel (Ewan Pendle and the White Wraith) on amazon, so you can have a look and decide if it may or may not be something you would be interested in reading – http://amzn.eu/6FjYTA3

Thanks for taking the time to consider my enquiry, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Best regards,
    Shaun

    • Dear Shaun Hume,

We are glad that people like our blog. As for your offer about reading your book, I would glaldly do it, but I’m really busy and overbooked with school and work right now. If it’s okay with you that the book only gets reviewed on a later day, say end of the summer, beginning of autumn that I can manage or more like guarantee that its going to get done. Otherwise, I don’t want to lie and say that I’m going to do it then I don’t.

So if its okay with you, this way
