OMG! This story completely took me by surprise. I had this book on my TBR list for a while now but I had to admit that the cover kind of misled me. Don’t let it this is a phenomenal story and nothing like the historical pulp fiction that the cover kind of suggests. This book is one of the five best books I read this year. And I disappointedly realized after finishing it that the second book is not out yet.
The book contains a fantastic and magical story and it has everything a good fantasy needs. Heart- pounding action, fierce romance, pulsing emotion, secrets and lies, in a vibrant world and with magical characters. All of these together create the perfect blend of addicting tale that penetrates the deepest corners of the soul. This book left me with such a high that after reading it I looked for something similar for weeks until I realized what an impossible task is that.
The author writing style is marvelous and she created a beautiful, enchanting but at the same time simple world for her story. It’s really an adventure to discover every little custom about it and the hierarchy and workings of it. But really the author introduces us to this world in such an effortless manner, you can’t even notice it. It’s not the dry info dump but a carefully interwoven pattern into the events and conversations. It helps that the heroine also has to learn these things. With the interesting world and story we also get a huge amount of emotions which comes through beautifully during reading. The heartache, betrayal, love, pain and everything else. The emotions simply seep of the pages and became palpable. Let’s just say that Winter king is an emotional roller coaster.
Kahmsin is a really powerful, and smart princess who is has every quality a leader needs, she also sees a lot of things that others doesn’t but can be real arrogant, too. However she was ignored and kind of exiled by her father her whole life for something out of her control. Still her only goal was to get his father recognition. She is fiercely protective of things she cares about but partly thanks to her seclusion she is a bit naïve and overly honest which cause problems and hurt feelings for her during the book . She is unbelievable lonely and only wants to be loved. I really loved her character she is so pure emotionally but strong and adaptive otherwise. She is simply beautiful and during her struggles my heart hurt for her.
Wynter also went through a lot during his life but in an entirely different way than Kham, still his past makes some of his behavior a good reason. He is really closed off and doesn’t trust outsiders easily because he got hurt a couple of time already. Unfortunately it also means that his concentration is so focused on the outsiders that he is blind to the faults of his countrymen and friend. But after you get through his walls you can see that he is fierce, strong, caring and a really good leader who is willing to sacrifice a lot for his people. In all honesty he and Kham have a really similar personality so they clash constantly.
The attraction and chemistry between the main characters are phenomenal. The sex scenes are so steamy, believable and well written. The action and the romance is perfectly balanced in this book. They provide each other with the one thing both of them needs the most, love and companionship. Unfortunately the mistrust and doubt the ones around Wynter project toward Kham constantly causes rift between them and Wynter himself sabotages the relationship a couple of times. Even Kham gives up trying to meet their expectations after they hurt her time and time again.
The story is really great there is a lot of romance in it but the excitement and action is also constant. There is not a dull moment in it and the emotional charge in it is just an added bonus. Not to mention the beautifully described scenic and vivid scenes. I loved the whole thing but I found the ending a bit abrupt. The big battle scene ending in a couple of pages after the huge built up.
